Carrier celebrates double environmental milestone

USA – Carrier has a double celebration to mark the 113th anniversary of Dr. Willis H. Carrier’s invention of modern air conditioning, as the date will also mark 175 million metric tons of avoided greenhouse gas emissions since 2000 thanks to the installation of high-efficiency Carrier systems. This environmental milestone will be recorded for posterity by the Carrier CO2NSERVATION Meter, which calculates the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that has been avoided as a result of the installation of Carrier air-conditioning, heating and refrigeration systems around the world.

Dr. Carrier unveiled his life-changing invention to the world on the 17th of July, 1902 at Sackett & Wilhelms Lithography and Printing Company in Brooklyn, New York. Carrier’s air conditioning system, which was designed to provide humidity control, helped improve printing processes during the hot summer months. Since that long-ago day in New York, modern air conditioning has continued to change the indoor environment by creating productive, comfortable and safe climates for people to work in, live and enjoy. Carrier continues to strive to create products that will improve the quality of life while also increasing energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

Carrier introduced its CO2NSERVATION Meter in 2010 with the aim of highlighting the environmental sustainability of Carrier’s energy-efficient products. The meter, which calculates the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that have been avoided with high-efficiency products from Carrier’s global portfolio using sales data to estimate the total products in use, displays the total metric tons of greenhouse gases avoided or saved on a rolling meter. Since 2000, Carrier claim that the greenhouse gas emissions avoided using their products is the equivalent of removing nearly 37 million passenger vehicles from the road for one year and also equates to the energy savings from eliminating electricity use from almost 24 million homes for a period of one year.

“As a sustainability leader, Willis Carrier invented precise cooling processes that enabled countless industries to avoid waste and preserve resources for future generations,” declared John Mandyck, chief sustainability officer, UTC Building & Industrial Systems. “More than 100 years later, we honour his legacy with this fitting milestone on the Carrier CO2NSERVATION Meter, which demonstrates the power of choosing energy-efficient systems. We will continue to pioneer products that make our world a better place to live today and for generations to come.”
